It is the Unique Culture of enslaved West African who inhabit the Sea Islands of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida prior and since the Civil War.

Historical Cemetery


Zion Cemetery, with the massive Baynard mausoleum built in 1846, marks the location of the Chapel of Ease. The Hilton Head Island Episcopal Church off Ease of St. Luke’s Parish was built c. 1786 under the direction of Isaac Fripp and Captain John Stoney.

Indian Shell Ring


Make sure to visit the 4,000 years old Native American site nestled inside the Forest Preserve. This unique ring, one of only 20 still remaining, is a national treasure now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Once inside the Sea Pines Plantation ($8 all day guest pass per car) admission to the Natural Wonder Forest Preserve and Indian Shell Ring is free.

Lighthouse Museum

Just under five decades old, the red-and-white-striped Harbour Town Lighthouse serves not only as a beacon to the many ships that reside in our Yacht Basin but also as a landmark that has come to symbolize Hilton Head Island to people all over the world.

With the addition of the Lighthouse Legends Tour in 2001, we were able to transform this icon into an informative, educational, and fun experience for all!
